What laser hair removal involves
Laser hair removal uses a device that sends pulses of light into the skin, aimed at hair follicles. It is usually done as a series of sessions spaced weeks apart, because hair grows in cycles. The number of sessions varies from person to person and area to area.
Skin tone and hair color both affect which device and settings fit. Common device types include diode, alexandrite and Nd:YAG lasers, and some providers use intense pulsed light. A licensed provider looks at your skin, hair and health history and decides what is suitable.
What a provider looks at first
Before laser hair removal, a licensed provider usually checks:
- your skin tone, often using a skin type scale
- your hair color and thickness in the area
- recent sun exposure, tanning or self-tanner
- medicines that raise light sensitivity, including some antibiotics and acne medicine by mouth
- pregnancy or breastfeeding
- a history of cold sores, if the face is involved
- tattoos or moles in the area
- hormone-related conditions that affect hair growth
These answers guide device choice, settings and timing.
Questions to have ready
Write these down before a laser consultation so you do not forget them in the room:
- Which device would you use for my skin and hair?
- Who will run the sessions?
- How many sessions do people usually have for this area?
- How far apart are sessions spaced?
- How is the cost of a series worked out?
- What should I do ahead of each session, and afterward?
Cost is set by each provider, so ask at the consultation. More ideas are on the questions to ask page.
Questions about laser hair removal
Does skin tone affect laser hair removal?
Yes. Skin tone and hair color affect which device and settings fit. Some devices are generally used for lighter skin, and others, such as Nd:YAG lasers, are often chosen for deeper skin tones. Ask the provider which device they use and why it suits you.
Should I shave before a session?
Many providers ask you to shave the area shortly before each session and to avoid waxing, plucking or hair removal creams for a while beforehand. Instructions differ, so follow the ones your provider gives you.
Who may operate a hair removal laser?
That is set by each state, including Florida, and rules differ. Some states limit it to physicians and nurses, while others allow trained technicians under supervision. Ask who will run your sessions, what training they have and who supervises them.
